Kokosan (kokosan), a fruit from the Meliaceae family commonly consumed in Southeast Asia but with limited research on its bioactive compounds. The research team successfully isolated a new onoceranoid glycoside, Lansioside E, along with two previously known compounds, from the fruit peel.

The structural characterization of Lansioside E was conducted using advanced spectroscopic methods, including FTIR, HRTOF-MS, 1D and 2D NMR, as well as computational NMR analysis (DP4+). These approaches provided a precise molecular profile of the compound.

To evaluate biomedical potential, the team tested the cytotoxic activity of the three isolated compounds against MCF-7 human breast cancer cells. Results revealed that one of the known compounds (Compound 3) demonstrated the strongest activity with an IC₅₀ value of 17.11 µg/mL, while Lansioside E showed moderate activity (IC₅₀ = 39.83 µg/mL) and Compound 2 exhibited weak effects (IC₅₀ = 271.90 µg/mL). Although Lansioside E was not the most potent, its novel structure and moderate cytotoxicity highlight its potential as a lead compound for future anti-cancer drug development.

This discovery contributes to natural product chemistry by expanding the chemical diversity of onoceranoid-type triterpenoids. It also demonstrates the value of using local biodiversity as a source of innovative therapeutic agents, aligning with global efforts to promote sustainable bioprospecting. The findings provide an important step toward developing cancer treatment options derived from natural products, while also encouraging the sustainable use of agricultural by-products such as fruit peels.

Credits

This research was led by Tri Mayanti, with contributions from Lutfiah Dwi Ramadhanti, Wahyu Safriansyah, Darwati, Nurlelasari, Desi Harneti, and Unang Supratman, representing Indonesian natural product chemistry teams.

Hashtags

#NaturalProducts #CancerResearch #SDG3 #KokosanFruit #DrugDiscovery #GreenPharma

Publication Link

https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/10286020.2025.2488314

This study focuses on the phytochemical exploration of Lansium domesticum Corr. cv.
