Using gene expression analysis and hormone profiling, the research compared transgenic and non-transgenic catfish under varying stocking densities, revealing significant differences in stress tolerance and immune resilience.

The results demonstrate that transgenic fish carrying the CgGH (growth hormone) gene exhibited higher expression of critical genes such as THR, HSP70, TLR1, and IgM, particularly under high-density conditions (90 fish/400 L). Unlike non-transgenic catfish, which showed elevated cortisol levels, increased white blood cell counts, and kidney damage under stress, the transgenic fish maintained lower cortisol levels, healthier kidney histology, and enhanced immune markers. The optimal stocking density (60 fish/400 L) was identified as the balance point where transgenic fish achieved both high growth performance and strong immune responses without physiological damage.

These findings highlight the potential of growth hormone transgenesis not only to improve aquaculture productivity but also to enhance animal welfare in intensive farming systems. The implications of this research are far-reaching, offering scientific evidence for the development of sustainable aquaculture practices. By reducing stress-related mortality and improving efficiency, this study contributes to SDG 2 (Zero Hunger) by ensuring food security, SDG 14 (Life Below Water) by promoting responsible aquaculture that protects aquatic ecosystems, and SDG 13 (Climate Action) by supporting more efficient aquaculture systems that can reduce environmental pressures associated with resource use.

This research is a pioneering step in understanding how genetic and hormonal regulation can be leveraged to sustain high-density aquaculture systems, ensuring both economic viability and ecological responsibility.

Inventor: Dr. Yuniar Mulyani, Prof. Ibnu Dwi Buwono, Dr. Roffi Grandiosa, and Dr. Fittrie Meyllianawaty Pratiwy

#TransgenicFish #AquacultureInnovation #SustainableAquaculture #ZeroHunger #ClimateAction #LifeBelowWater #FishImmunity #BlueEconomy #FoodSecurity #AquaticGenomics

A research study led by Dr. Yuniar Mulyani sheds light on the complex relationship between stocking density, stress, and immune response in G6 transgenic mutiara catfish (Clarias gariepinus).
