This position strongly influences seasonal variability across the region. Consequently, the Indonesian Archipelago, comprising more than 17,000 islands, represents a significant Maritime Continent that plays a crucial role in regional and global climate variability. This has long attracted the attention of researchers worldwide, who have conducted expeditions in Indonesia since 1899–1990, including the Snellius, Arlindo Circulation and Mixing, and INSTANT expeditions. Research efforts have further intensified since the Indonesian government acquired six research vessels: Baruna Jaya I, II, III, IV, VII, and VIII.

Recognizing the importance of Indonesia’s Maritime Continent in understanding climate change and the necessity for effective management of the country's rich marine and coastal resources, the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences at Universitas Padjadjaran established the Study Center for Climate and Regional Maritime Management. This center acts as a catalyst for Unpad’s maritime research capabilities to become a leading center of excellence in climate studies and maritime area management in Indonesia, a regional leader within ASEAN, and a reference point for the international scientific community in understanding maritime continent processes.

Objectives

The objectives of establishing the Center for Climate Studies and Maritime Area Management, Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences, Universitas Padjadjaran are:

Support the Vision and Mission of Universitas Padjadjaran by advancing research, strategy, and policy development on climate change and sustainable maritime area management.

Develop a center capable of understanding the impacts of climate change on coastal ecosystems and providing recommendations for sustainable, inclusive, and participatory maritime management.

Design and promote working and business models to support integrated climate change and maritime management strategies, based on the potential and human resources of each region.

Targets

The establishment of this study center targets four main goals:

Academic community of FPIK Unpad as the main agents of research, development, and utilization of climate and maritime management studies.

Regional governments managing coastal areas to strengthen their understanding of climate and maritime management.

Private sector and civil society partners, both domestic and international, engaged in activities in areas vulnerable to climate change and maritime management challenges.

Institutional partners with technological and scientific capacities necessary to achieve the Center’s objectives.

Scope of Activities

The scope of the Center’s activities covers four primary areas: education, research and development, community service, and partnership development.

Vision

To become a leading institution in research, study, planning, and community service aimed at fostering development based on climate change adaptation and sustainable maritime area management, to achieve societal welfare and enhance Indonesia’s maritime human resources.

Mission

Develop information access on local and regional climate change for the academic community of Universitas Padjadjaran.

Enhance the potential of the Study Center for Climate and Regional Maritime Management in education, research, and community service.

Mobilize the academic potential of Universitas Padjadjaran to contribute human resources, science, and technology for regional and national development.

Roles

The Center plays a role in four domains: education, research and development, community engagement, and partnerships — all within the framework of applying science and technology for climate change adaptation and maritime area management.

Work Programs

The study center's work program is divided into four levels:

1.
